As an impartial third party (who neither produced nor purchased this product: The Deliverance Convention) might I say that I found KA's original report to be specific, pragmatic and comprehensive. At times I smiled at the straightforward reports of disorganization: anyone who has attended many cons has shared some of those experiences - having them all in one weekend brings to mind a slapstick comedy con film. But I am bemused by all the subsequent bruhaha over the original innocuous report. Perhaps the con producers need to see the event through the eyes of a "customer" who spent, literally, thousands of dollars for the experience. > To be honest, Kathryn's review was quite upsetting to those of us who had > worked so hard to make the con work, so try and see some of Diva's > comments in that light. It's said, "The truth hurts." Perhaps if the criticisms were obviously delusional, the con producers would have laughed them off as the product of Dorian's sick mind. Now, I could tell from Diva's .uk suffix that she's British. Being a Yank, from rather a rude culture, I often notice the contrast on this list of the Austalian's extreme frankness and the Brit's more mannered restraint. I enjoy both styles of expression and never feel threatened by someone else's opinion, however expressed. It is, after all, simply an opinion. It rolls off my back like water off a duck. I trust that we all can respect the words of (Thomas Jefferson?) who said something like: "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." I've been accused of political correctness becuase I don't drink coffee. For God's sake, I just don't like coffee, okay? ... The phrase is used as an all-purpose, censoring insult. Okay..where did i get to .. I have to point out that i still haven't had time to read most of the con reports properly although I have gathered that there appears to have been rather a lot of critiscm of the con and of the personnel involved. I am hoping that none of this has got nasty towards anyone, My comments in this report were mainly written at the time and none of the problems or disappointments i encountered over the weekend actually ruined the con for me, i still had a wonderful time and would have done it all over again even with the problems. Saturday Ah ha, Breakfast..excellent as is usual in most of the Moat House hotels i have stayed in. Suitably fed and watered consulted the agenda for the day :) Went to the opening ceremony, they kept it very brief, showed the video again with a little less sound this time ! Bits i can remember the guests saying.. Sheelagh mentioned that she had been loaned the video from Wolf 359 showing Gareth made up as Gauda Prime Blake, this to a huge roar of approval from the hall. Brian Croucher we were told had been involved in a minor road accident on the way to the convention so he couldn't make it, this was a shame but at least he wasn't hurt. The Federation Panel was therefore just Jackie and Stephen I couldn't believe how good SG looked, he and Jackie have a very good rapport and the panel was very entertaining. As usual they were asked they favourite ep's, Jackie said 'Sand' Stephen said Duel I seem to remember Jackie saying she liked Sand because she got to snog Steven Pacey and he was seriously pretty Uh oh, my notes have gone a little haywire at this point, meaning they seem to make very little sense ! i have got written on my note pad.... Jackie very anti BBC Jackie very complimentary about Terry Nation Jackie felt that the BBC should not have asked BC to take over from SG as Travis, she felt that they should have created a new character for him. Stephen said he would have come back as Travis but the filming clashed schedules with a file he was doing in the South of France, Overall the panel was good with Jackie having the audience in stitches with her story about being arrested for possession of cannabis resin. (I am sure someone could recite the whole story better than i can ) Oh as an aside i managed to get some good photo's of SG and JP in this one , the set, which someone who's name they did tell us , but i've forgotten, was FANTASTIC , Someone must have put in huge amounts of work to create something like that, whoever it was deserves a medal for devotion above and beyond the call of duty to B7. Anyway on with the report.. After the panel they showed some footage of PD in Macbeth followed by a short TV interview with PD and the actress playing lady Macbeth They did tell us that it was raw footage however we saw the same scene acted at least 4 times if not more It was lovely to see PD and Avon addicted as even i am , the same scene over and over was a little much for even me to take. Eventually they showed the short interview, Goodness knows who was interviewing and for what station but some of the questions were plain daft, Paul handled then with ease and i have to admit he looked very relaxed and handsome, i am sure a few attendees were wishing he were there. It would have been nice to have had Paul there, GT kept mentioning him, I don't know how well they genuinely get on but it felt to me .. and I may be wrong , that Gareth almost wished he were there even if only to spar with ! I missed the panel with David Maloney and Chris Boucher and went to queue for autographs, a mistake as it turned out as there was a huge queue no room at the inn, we were give raffle tickets and told we would have priority at the next session tomorrow morning.. So off i wandered to the Exhibition... WOW, this was superb...what an achievement, to have so much stuff together.. i spent hours in here The REAL baby orac and the real (albeit a bit worse for wear) full size orac.. this more than made up for no PD (I love Orac, he was my favourite as a child, second only to Avon of course) This made the convention for me there was so much to see, someone or several someones i think had put an awful lof of hard work into this, they permitted us to use video cameras and to take still shots, everyone in there was very generous with their time, Mat Irvine especially spent hours and hours talking to fans, never seeming to tire of explaining anything to anyone, i never saw him get agitated or ruffled all weekend, a pleasure to talk to and listen to. I paid a brief visit to the dealers room where i signed up for Redemption (guess i had better start watching a bit of B5 !) and bought Judith's filk tape and Forbidden Star 2, i have read about half the stories so far - all excellent, review to follow when all finished. The afternoon panel was Gareth, David Jackson, Peter Tuddenham and Sally Knyvette For some reason i didn't make a huge amount of notes on this panel, i must have been laughing too much!. I remember that they spoke of their favourite episodes and their first experience of acting in response to a question. They joke with PT about him being hidden in the corner behind a curtain and he replied, with a quip about and ' sometimes even talking to myself ' and gave a quick Orac/Zen chat. To a huge roar of laughter GT disappears off stage to return with a life size cardboard cut out of PD, he puts this next to PT, i seem to remember SK moving him later on because it was either blocking the light or making her uneasy..something like that anyway and the cutout moved behind the set, this was to become a regular feature whenever GT was about, he turned up in the bar, the autograph queue..! I remember Sally saying that he felt very inexperienced when in B7 and felt she could have stood up for herself more, she remembered Gareth speaking up for her and Jan at the time. It sounded as if she is still a little bit anti BBC, although she then went on to say what fun she had had with the location filming et etc There were lots of anecdotes about location filming most of which i can't remember.. The panel ended far too quickly for me , I can listen to Gareth all afternoon, I should mention that David Jackson is lovely and very much like Gareth in as much as i could listen to him talk for ages. A very entertaining panel. I didn't stay for the Sevenfold Crown panel but went back to the exhibition. There is still more to go on Saturday, it was going to be a long day... Any time after 3 pm is fine with me for starting the bash. I have two friends coming, Brent and Troy Anderson with their kids, Emma (5.5) and Nate (1.5), so they will be here in the afternoon, probably leaving in the evening. We can end when we like. Agenda..... Well, I thought we could get some conference reports from Ross and Cheryl, and perhaps some PICTURES of the conferences, England, and if Ross has any of his homeland, that would be fantastic. And of course, Cheryl MUST tell us about her close encounter with Paul Darrow. Since we are a group and have decided on a name, perhaps we would like t-shirts...just a thought...lets talk about it. Food: I decided on soup/salad/bread cause it seemed easy. Penny : Italian vegetable beef soup, seafood chowder Chad: Chad's infamous salad will once again make a guest appearance for the Rabble. Rhonda: a Vegetarian soup Cheryl? Suggestion: bread of any kind or salad Ovina? Suggestion: bread of any kind or salad Sandi & Chris? (are not sure if they can make it or not.) Any new guests are welcome...as long as they bring something to eat! E mail me and we can get you initiated. (Please, no alcohol.) I have videos of Star Cops, Blake's 7, and even Thomas the Tank Engine if we want. Reminder: I have a dog, three cats, and 17 (no, that is not a typo) guinea pigs...so if you have allergies you may want to bring a gas mask. Wow, what a haul! Six gen fiction zines, two adult fiction zines, and a filk zine, in addition to the con's nonfiction publications. Did I leave anything out? Maybe the publishers could post information about mail-order availability, for the benefit of interested parties who weren't at the con? Judith P., is Stadler Link available through you? I haven't had the chance to read any of my new zines yet, but they look very promising. Post more reviews, please! Also, I just noticed while looking through the Programme Guide a mention that floor plans of the Liberator would be sold in the exhibition hall, but I don't remember seeing them. Did anybody else get a set? Can they still be had?
