File	pub/geography/README

This directory contains maps and other geographic data.

The numbers given for each file (like 4,236 for README) is the
file size in bytes. Think of this before you start FTP-ing the
larger files. There are files as large as eight megabytes in
this directory. The entire directory contains 32 megabytes
worth of files. Don't use more of your own disk space or of
the network bandwidth than necessary. Most file groups below
have separate README files with you could look at before
deciding on getting the larger files.

Your questions and ideas are always welcome.

From various volumes of newsgroups comp.sources.misc and
comp.sources.unix, these are some minor utilities mainly for
unpacking the data received in comp.mail.maps.

ORIGIN: Many sites archive these newsgroups. Here are two:

-rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 1,351,445 Jun 12 jlp-world.tar.Z
These are two separate maps (USA and World). James L Peterson
in Austin TX <james.peterson@mcc.com> put them in one tar,
added some software, and announced it in comp.graphics in
September 1988. There is more info in the file jlp-README.

The quality of the map data in jlp-world.tar are relatively
poor. The wdb2- files are much more detailed and accurate.

		cd	pub
		get	WorldMap.tar.Z (1.6 MByte)

-rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 114,555 Jun 12 multicsmap.tar.Z
This is something old with software originally written i PL/1.

	ORIGIN:	ftp	charon.mit.edu
		cd	pub/MulticsMap

This is supposed to be a version of the World Databank II
mentioned below. The reid-README claims Brian Reid at DECWRL
made the compaction from 46 MBytes down to these 10 MBytes.
There is no spec on the binary map file format except for the
source code in the software tar.

These are (some parts of) the World Databank II as compiled
by USAs Central Intelligence Agency. The files contain map
data for one continent each. Each map consists of three files:
		cil.dat - coastlines, islands, lakes
		bdy.dat - political land borders
		riv.dat - rivers
Of all public domain map files, the WDB II seems to be the
most detailed and accurate one. You will probably want these
data, but remember the files are large.

	ORIGIN:	ftp	gatekeeper.dec.com
cd	/.8/graphics/data/cia-wdb (used to be pub/maps)
		get	wdb2.tar.Z (46 MByte)

-rw-rw-r-- aronsson local 794,491 Jun 9 world-factbook.Z
This is the electronic edition of CIAs 1990 World Factbook.
It is one big ASCII text file with data on the worlds 249
	countries.

	ORIGIN:	ftp	relay.cs.toronto.edu
		cd	doc/geography
		get	world-factbook (2 MByte)
