Oh, as if there ever were... Well... there probably _are_ Finnish dates. Nina told me during the interview that the single "Sick & Tired" had been released in England, France, Denmark, Finland and Japan. A probable tour would cover these countries. She mentioned 4 (uncertain yet) gigs in Japan. No changes since "Head Is Mighty". Second impression: hmm, what's this? 'Allegiance' in a soft version? On the A West Side compilation "We're All Part of a Family" that song is a lot tougher, harder, more guitars, faster. Here it sounds like they completely removed the bass, the electric guitars, the things that made it work before. A shame really. Third impression: they are a lot softer than before. Sometimes. There are a couple of tracks that are _hard_, like 'man/2', 'hardliner' and 'hell of man'. Some tracks are soft, like 'allegiance', 'mother goose' and 'I guess yes', 'spring clean' and 'early risers'. Some still on the edge of bursting into raving guitar-walls, which 'I guess yes' do at times. Then there are Blithe-tracks like 'haven', wonderful pills like 'now you know', 'losefer' (if there will be a single from this one, I bet 'losefer' will be the title-track.) 'mind dent' reminds me of early blithe. Total impression: I like it. blithe-fans will too. A new audience? I don't think so. They won't reach other people than their already steady base of fans around the world with this one, because it's _blithe_, and it really sounds like _blithe_ all over. I have no idea how many copies they usually sell, but I can't see this one doing better than their earlier ones, and I'm not sure they want it to either. They make their music, for those who finds it brilliant, like me, like their fans. They didn't do a "Bear Quartet" with this one, and I'm happy about that. My personal score: 3+ out of 5 points. --------------------- Date: Sat, 8 Apr 1995 22:54:42 +0200 From: Erik S|derstr|m Subject: Waterbug Interview 06-Apr-95 Short interview with "Waterbug" 06-Apr-95 - by Erik Soderstrom after a gig at "Herrgar'n", Linkoping, Sweden. (v1.0) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Waterbug are: Pelle Hedlund (drums) Rickard Nilsson (vocals) Patrik Jonasson (bass) Anders Rasmusson (guitar) Robert Nilsson (vocals & guitar) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (if the answer is "A." it was answered by someone. If the answer came from someone special, the initials are written.) Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG TONIGHT? RoN. Fun. A lot of people. But we had horror visions about this place before we came here. We imagined it'd look like a living room! But it didn't. The stage was a bit different though. It swayed. But it was okay anyway. Q. DID THE HOCKEY SM FINAL CREATE ANY PROBLEMS? RoN. No, it suited us fine (and the right team won too!), we started to play about 15 minutes after the match so that the hockey-fans had enough time to get here [laugh]. Q. WHAT SONGS DID YOU PLAY? A. 'Pedestrian Beware', 'Arizona', 'That Sound', 'Lost In The Pancake', 'Buttersinger', 'Insanity' 'Hollywood', 'Farewell', 'Birdnest' and 'Meatballs', 'Bigamy', 'Yellow' (the extra number). Q. ARE YOU TOURING RIGHT NOW? A. Well we're playing in Norrkoping 15/4, Emmaboda 21/4, Vaxjo 22/4 and in Gothenburg on the 13/5 on the Rock For Angola festival that Ung Vanster are responsible for. Other bands there will be Mufflon 5, Larry, Honey Is Cool, Salt, Broder Daniel, Blissful and Monsterrock (with members from Teddybears and Girlsmen among others). Q. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT PLAYING IN A BAND? A. Pelle works as an educated daycare dad, Robert works as a guard. Anders is a mailman and the rest of us studies. Robert and Rickard are twins by the way. Rickard is the little brother though. Q. WHEN DID YOU START AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM? A. We're from Gothenburg and started around 1988 under the name Pull, after the text on the inside of cigarette packs you know? But back then we were only tree; Rickard, Robert and Anders and a drum machine (Roland TR 505). Actually, we were a band before that, with another member, but we won't go into that. Anyway, we had to take a break between every third song to re-program the drum machine. Pull... damn indie name, and we had a Manchester sound too. 1991, Patrik joined to play bass and sing. Then about spring 1993 Pelle joined and we formed Waterbug. Q. WHY THE NAME WATERBUG? A. Nothing special. We just took it. Maybe it's because Rickard and Robert like to fish a lot? Q. WHAT DO YOU CALL YOUR MUSIC NOW? A. Not indie! Pop-punk maybe. Q. HOW ABOUT RELEASES? A. We released our demo "Supercalyfragiliticexpialidocious" in the spring of 1993 and then we have our full-length CD with the same name which we recorded dyring november-december 1994 and it came out in february 1995. We also have earlier demos of course. Q. HOW ABOUT INFLUENCES / SONGWRITING? A. Pavement, Flaming Lips, Pixies. Other than that it's pretty wide. All of us listen to most things except Eurodisco. Q. WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO RIGHT NOW? A. The same things that we're influenced by. PH. Robert's CD player is in a pawnshop at the moment. Q. YOU'RE SIGNED TO A WEST SIDE FABRICATION. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? A. We just sent the "Super.." demo in the spring of 1993. Jocke [the owner of West Side] got really excited and told us to 'continue to make music like that and you'll get a contract!'. So we recorded another demo (really well produced and perfect, we thought anyway) and sent it to him. He hated it. He thought it was over-produced, and it probably was. Then we thought we'd give it all up and do something else with our lives, but we recorded yet another demo, porta this time, that we thought was just plain shit, a lot of noise really. So of course he loved it and signed us on the spot. That was during the summer of 1994. Q. HAVE YOU BEEN FEATURED IN THE PRESS/TV/MEDIA? A. A funny thing about how we got signed to West Side is that JF in Expressen [a swedish evening paper] loved the demo that Jocke hated and it was the other way around with the other demo. We were featured in Expressen before Jocke got the one he didn't like (which we thought he'd like), sort of like we would be signed to West Side next week, and Jocke read it and thought "what the hell is this?!". PH. We've also been "Demo of the week" on Vapour Trail, a radio station in Gothenburg. As well as house gods! Maybe you know Ballde? Q. YOU'RE ONE OF THE LATEST BANDS ON THE WEST SIDE LABEL.... A. Yeah, we and Blissful are really the _last_ ones for a while. Jocke is not signing any new bands now. His stable is pretty much full, and his resources are limited as you probably now. Q. WHAT FESTIVALS WILL YOU BE PLAYING THIS YEAR? A. Emmaboda, Trastocksfestivalen, Ljungby and probably Hultsfred as well (they've been telling us we'd play there for a year now). [They passed out some Emmaboda Festival 1995 cards, and one of them had a Emmaboda Festival 1995 t-shirt with him.] Q. ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO FINISH THIS INTERVIEW WITH? RoN. Ha ha! Yeah. When Rickard and Anders were rail-roving in the spring of 1991 they saw Johnny Marr at a hamburger restaurant in England. They had a copy of NME with them, and had to check it to make sure it was him. 'Is it really him?' 'Yes! Give him a copy of the demo!'. So they did. We haven't heard from him though. Ha ha. If you listen to 'Meatballs' you hear a line there about it too. It goes like "I met Johnny Marr at a hamburger bar". A. We have to drive home tonight (300 kilometers)! Some of us has to work tomorrow. It'll take about 4 hours to drive because we have a trailer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- Date: Sat, 8 Apr 1995 23:07:23 +0200 From: Erik S|derstr|m Subject: Emmaboda Festival 1995 Here's the line-up for the Emmaboda Festival 1995 (16-17 June) (with reservations for changes) -------------------------------------------------------------- Absolution, Ray Wonder, Naked, Mazarine Street, Refused, The Arc, The Odd Numbers, Broder Daniel, Yvonne, Smash Hit Wonders, Brainiac, Backyard Babies, Waterbug, Archers Of Loaf, Blender, Star Market, Charlotts, Loosegoats. It was supposed to get out in november 94 but for some reason it did not. So I would be thankfully if someone could provide me with more info. I feel a bit handicaped when it comes to Scandinavian indie music here in my temporary position in Colorado, so I hope this list will give me some of the input I dont get at at the moment. I've been on the uk-indie list for nearly a year now, and I hope this will be at least as inspiring... Favourite Scandinavian band at the moment (ot within the last 1/2 year): Murmur (DK) Exterme noise, but somewhere down there at least I'm able to find songs. Not everyone would give me right.... But they was still better a year ago before they got a male singer :( Death Tothe (DK) (something tells me that the spelling are wrong, damn) They are competing with Picnic for the title "the weidest band in dk". Are famous for their use of helium and strange things as instruments" 18th Dye (DK) King of Noise Pop.... Their singles have been a succes in UK How Do I (DK) Crossover between REM and Orbital according to themself Picnic (DK) The weidest band in DK, maybe they sound like a crossover between RHCP and Residents ?? ;-) See them live if you get the chance Bel Canto (N) Hurrah, I just managed to find their two first albums for 6$ :) Biosphere (N) Phatasnik is amsing. Geir is a genious ;-) Velvet Belly (N) Don't know much about them, but the songs i've have heard was ace. Please give me more info Cardigans (S) Maybe a bit to poppy, but I guess that one of my swedish roommates have convinced me ;-) This was maybe not the best list I could come up with due to the time of the day /night...but what the heck. I've picked up the KUKL records plus some more rare stuff (at least in Denmark) as Tappi Tikaras and Purrkur pillnikk. I saw Reptile some years ago, so I didn't knew they still was playing. Do you have any idea where I can buy Reptile records. I think I browsed through any record shop, 3 years ago with no result :( Of the newer stuff can I say that I heard a tune with Unun. And I think it kept me dancing for a week in the computer lab back at the university in Denmark. I don't know if people are aware of the Bad Taste web server. But it's awesome that you can download soundclips from these unknown groups (I bet the icelandics would call most of the danish groups unknown too ;) ) The address is http://www.centrum.is/badtaste/ As I did mention in my previous post, I have to deal with the nordic indie scene on remote, since I'm in Colorado for half a year (just outside Denver... Golden if it have any meaning for anyone). There is a lot of concerts here, but I think I will be sick of american guitar rock before the end of the summer. -Morten ----- Morten Wendell Pedersen, geofmwp@aau.dk / morten@dix.mines.colorado.edu http://www.aau.dk/~geofmwp --------------------- Date: Sat, 15 Apr 1995 16:59:56 +0300 (EET DST) From: Albert Sigurdsson Subject: Re: Sorry Iceland ;-) Actually I dont know of any Icelander besides myself on this list, at least they are lurkers (like me) if theyre here. I on the other hand have a recording of them from the Icelandic radio in 92. Then they had a new lineup, the sax-girl gone and an accordian player replaced her. And the new songs ..greeaaat! All from Sweden. The first three are on A West Side Fabrication and the last one on MVG Records. Probably hard to find over there though (if not impossible). Lurking around. > anyway, doesn't anyone have any anything to say about the music-festivals > that are taking place this summer? what about the line-up for the hultsfred > festival? roskilde? emmaboda? anyone? Well, I haven't heard anything about the Roskilde festival, but I'm really happy about Beastie Boys, Monster Magnet, Hedningarna (again!), Cardigans (again!) and Honey Is Cool playing the Hultsfred festival. I'm pretty disapointed about the Emmaboda festival though. Compare it with last years line-up, and you know what I mean. And even though it's 2 days this year! I guess the ones I'm looking forward to see there are only Yvonne, Refused and Waterbug. > i, myself, are quite excited about the fact that both hulstfred and > especially emmaboda are bringing a few american indie bands over here to > stop the complete domination of boring-british-bands. I'd like to see Slowdive, Charlatans, Cranes, Verve, Adorable (if they were still together), Stone Roses, Curve (if they were still together), Revolver (if they are still alive?), My Bloody Valentine (if they are still alive), Pale Saints, Lush, Cocteau Twins and so on, playing ANY swedish festival this year. Last year, Verve at Hultsfred was the highlight for me at least. Then again, I'd like to see American bands like Poster Children, Super 31, Orange, Smashing Pumpkins, Juliana Hatfield, Matthew Sweet and so on, as well. > i don't know, i hope that i am not too off-topic here. if so, sorry > for wasting bandwith. The version I saw had a sticker on the front saying that: "The last five songs listed in the booklet are _not_ included on this disc and were never intended to be." It had 17 songs listed in the booklet, and with the above sticker, I gather it contains 12. I didn't buy it today though (short of cash) and I can't remember the name of it, but it's out anyway. :) //Erik ---------------------- Date: Thu, 20 Apr 1995 02:46:26 +0200 From: Erik S|derstr|m Subject: Swedish Band Tour Dates (950419) Here are some tour dates for some swedish "indie" bands I thought I'd post to the list in case someone might want to know what's going on around in Sweden at the moment. Now that some bands are listed to play this year, could that someone let the rest of us know the line-up? Even if it's preliminary, it would be nice to know something about it. Date, Place etc as well? Thanks! //Erik ---------------------- Date: Thu, 20 Apr 1995 02:52:58 +0200 From: Erik S|derstr|m Subject: Hultsfred Festival Tickets By the way, tickets to the Hultsfred Festival are being sold as of yesterday (or the day before that). I have no idea how much they cost though. Anyway, they're available now. //Erik End of SI Digest #2.04 **********************
